Always Be Improving

Always Be Improving

It gets easier. Every day it gets a little easier. But you’ve got to do it every day, that’s the hard part. But it does get easier.

Going through change is tough, especially when it doesn’t seem right. The past few years, I’ve joined and worked with many small teams with varying success. I met some amazing people, had the opportunity to work on interesting projects, and learned a lot about myself along the way. There have been some twists and turns, hills and valleys, straightaways, and potholes.

The thing that I’ve learned that helps me get through difficult times is that you can always be improving. Every day you live, you can be the best version of yourself that ever was. Every day is an opportunity to learn something new, connect with someone, or experience something different. I’ve suffered from depression in the past and have found this to be the ultimate remedy – especially combined with exercise.

For the last year, I’ve been going to the gym to improve my fitness and work ethic. I started by going once a week and then twice a week. I got hurt a few times but recovered and returned to the gym as soon as I could. Now it’s the middle of December and I am now going at five times a week. The point of this isn’t to brag about my transformation into a gym bro – more so to illustrate that positive change can happen over time.

I’ve also taken this year to improve my health and diet. Before I was a huge carboholic and lover of late night snacks. I’ve since switched over my diet to protein/veggie foods and have lost over 20 pounds since the start of this year. I’ve also stopped taking heavy prescription medications – a consequence of my new exercise routine and diet. With the addition of some quality vitamins, I’ve never felt better in my life.

Below is an quick clip I found from the Netflix series Bojack Horseman. Despite the colorful & cartoony visuals, this show really dives deep and discusses depression and loneliness to a degree that I haven’t seen on television before. Before you click the link, there’s a bit of a backstory. The “‘Jogging Baboon’ also appears in opening scene of the second episode of season three (“The BoJack Horseman Show”) which is a flashback episode that takes place in 2007, except this time he has a jogging companion who appears to be an old lady” (Medium). In the subsequent sightings of this character, he is seen running alone. As Bojack begins his journey of self-improvement, the Jogging Baboon appears at just the perfect moment. See below.
